    How Much does Esprit Cost

If you are programming a 4 axis mill, how much is Esprit going to cost a new shop?

Esprit is a premium product just like Mastercam, GibbsCam and others. It will be priced the same as they are, for fourth axis I would expect to spend around $8-$12k or possibly more. The last version of Esprit I worked with was a long time ago and I am not sure just how much the price may have changed. But either way they will be competitively priced to the other main players for the same package. If you really want a quote you will have to ask them, they have specials all the time just like everyone else. You never know when you might catch a bit of a bargain, but dont expect to save super bucks.

Perhaps my thinking is off but, as a CAM programming company you do not own seats of other CAM software? Especially some of the industry leading software such as NX, Esprit and MasterCam. If you don't know what your competition is doing how are you to stay relevant? I guess maybe your intent with this comment may be a sort of 'reverse promotion' attempt..but I could be wrong. Kind of a 'look what we almost do as good as these guys for half the price'..sort of comment. Maybe you could shed some light as to your intent Al.

The price can be dependent on a number of factors, not the least, how large your company is and what they feel you can pay. I remember inquiring about Autodesk Alias Automotive for a class-A surfacing project we had. I was told by the reseller that the price was anywhere from $10K to $55K depending on how big your company was. He actually asked me how much I would like to pay!! Why do you think the price is such a mystery? No offense intended Al, but the software business can be pretty shady. Can you imagine if everything we bought worked that way?
We payed over $30K for Esprit, but that was for mill/turn. I don't know what it would cost for other packages, but, personally, Esprit would be the last solution I would look at for anything.

Recently we went head to head with a Esprit. And as you know BobCAD is a lost cost solution so our price point of $8995 for a 4 axis pro software with support training and 1 year of updates and upgrades we thought was a fair price and would be way under what other CAM packages would charge. Well we were wrong, this client got an offer from a Esprit for $10,000. With the price point so close and many shops in the clients area using a Esprit and happy with it, the client choose esprit.
So in my mind, the client must be missing something on his quote or some hidden price or noting getting machine sim, posting, support, setup, and tool path options something. It was hard for me to believe esprit was selling at $10,000 for a mult axis package. So I hit the boards and asked what is the common cost just to get a better idea of what is normal.
I don't know if this was a special offer or the standard for Esprit. But more importantly was the client getting all the features he needed. I know for us when you go mulit axis we open up the 7 surface based paths that you can use in 3 or 4 that gives you all kinds of control.. And if Esprit is selling a package with the same features sets for just a little more $$$ then we may need to adjust our price to hold the low cost market.

He might be getting Esprit with 4th axis, but I think he might not be getting the first 3 for that price! lol
Did you happen to see the quote for this? Perhaps this was just a bargaining tactic?
I could see this price if perhaps he was taking over someone elses license..a one time transfer fee, but not a new 2014 Esprit license.

I can't speak for Esprit specifically, but generally, the price of CAM is trending way down.

For the price of Esprit, take a look at NX.
When I got it informally quoted (while getting real quotes for the CAD side), I was told that NX for 3+2 milling didn't require the 4th or 5th axis package; positional moves for 4th/5th axis work were included with the 3 axis package. IIRC, it was around $9k.

From what I remember, bobcad pricing was quite flexible as well. Seemed the price dropped slightly with each week the sales guy called

Wait.what? A seat of NX capable of 3+2 is 9k and Bobcad 4x is 9k as well? WTF?

From the quotes I have gotten, Hypermill and NX, are both cheaper then MC or Gibbs for simultaneous 4 or 5 axis milling.

HyperMILL must be a bit cheaper than in the UK! What Functionality did you have for that price?

I had a quote of $50k for a seat of Hypermill about 10 years ago. That was without any 5-axis functionality. They came in and did a demo, but our WorkNC, even back then, blew it away in functionality.
Al, I wonder if that quote for Esprit did not include the peripherals as you mentioned? I know they charge a lot extra for the post-processor. I believe it's around $1K per axis. That pisses me off. Without a post, the software is useless. It's like buying a car, but you need to spend $5K more to get the keys. It took them 26 tries to get the post right for our Integrex. It was like the first time they had ever heard of that machine, although I was assured by the reseller that they work with Mazak all the time, and it would be ready to go on day 1. It took months!! I won't even talk about the $23K it took to repair our machine because of a bad post.
I will admit, most of our problems were with the reseller, not necessarily the product itself. Once it got going, it's been working fine.
I don't know your customer, but I already can say with confidence that they should have bought your product! :-)

Ouch that was steep, that's a lot more than we paid.
I'm not sure what HyperMILL was like 10 years ago but I would be amazed if that is still the case these days especially with the 5 axis. We have recently moved from Visi and haven't looked back.

Full 5 axis hypermill was around 26-28k, and I kinda think that even included base level solidworks, that was from about 2 or 3 years ago. The only reason I didn't go with it was of lack of training documentation, and no local users to hire to operate it. Otherwise pretty slick software.
